What your check engine light really means

That little orange light can mean a dozen things — some trivial, some serious. Here's how to read it.

Steady vs. flashing

A steady light usually means a non-urgent issue you should get checked soon. A flashing light means a problem serious enough to risk engine damage — pull over and call us.

Common causes

• A loose or worn gas cap
• A failing oxygen sensor
• Worn spark plugs or coils
• Catalytic converter issues
